Don Melchor Vertical Tasting

Had the privilege and opportunity for a Don Melchor Tasting.

Don Melchor first vintage was in 1987, named after the founder of Concha Y Toro. . It is said, in every second in Asia a bottle of Concha Y Toro is opened. Making them the largest exporters of wines in the world.

Led by Enrique, Don Melchor was constantly named the top drinkable Cabernet Sauvignon in the world. Being well known for its value for money quality against it's French peers. When it was first started, it tried to mirror the blends of Bordeaux. As time went by, the blend was stripped and only Cabernet Sauvignon (Drawn from 7 different parcels) was left with a low percentage of other varitals.

Here is the verdict:
'88: Past it's prime, smelled oxidised and went flat after half an hour
'89: Elegant, still have 2 years left. Reminded me of some great Bordeaux i drank. Floral notes
'93: Was a fence sitter for most. Felt like a transitional year, where the character of the wine was yet to be defined.
'13: Clear fruit profile, dark fruits scented aroma
'14: Similar to the '13 vintage, the balance of the acids/body is evident. The palate matches the nose of the wine.

Left to Right: '88, '89, '93, '13 and '14
