Groot Constantia, A Decade of Excellence

Groot Constantia Cellar

Groot Constantia the oldest winery South Africa, has an illustrious history that will make any winery envious. Since 1685 to be exact. History though doesn't ensure the survival of any business, or in this case winery. Revolution, innovation and progression does.
"The big emphasis has been on precision viticulture- healthy vineyards and best, sustainable practices to maximise the quality in the vineyards" - Boela Gerber, Winemaker

What started as a sweet wine only winery, has progressed into producing some of the world's best dry whites and reds. Remodeled cellar, also meant cutting edge technology being brought in to ensure consistent quality.  I recalled the time i was riding through the gates of Groot Constantia. The road leading to the cellar was lined with trees neatly planted in a straight line. There was a seriousness about the way each employee went about their chores, to suggest a hallmark of class. People who took what they did with pride.

As a result, the Chardonnays packed an oaked punch, the Shiraz possess a mesmerizing tannin structure and the Grand Constance has a mouth watering sweetness.

"2016 has been warm and dry, which is not a bad thing in a cool, wet winegrowing region.  All the reds from 2016 in barrels look amazing.  2017 was dry, but not as hot as 2016.  It is still early, but the 2017 whites look awesome, and the Cabernet’s and Merlot’s are also showing a lot of promise". - Boela Gerber, Winemaker

The future looks bright indeed.
